Criteria for Checking Whether Overseas News Photos and Videos Were Taken From a Different Event
A dramatic image does not have to be digitally fabricated to mislead viewers. It may be a genuine photograph from an older disaster, a video from another country, or an authentic clip reposted with a false description.
The most reliable way to check it is not to search for one visible mistake. Instead, test four parts of the claim separately: where the footage first appeared, where it was recorded, when it was recorded, and who originally captured it.
A single clue can justify further checking, but you should avoid declaring footage false until several pieces of evidence point to the same conclusion.
Use Reverse Image Search to Find the Earliest Appearance
A photograph or video should be preserved in the form in which the claim first appeared. The account name, caption, publication time, stated location, and any credited source may later change or disappear, so the original URL and a screenshot provide a useful record of what was actually claimed.
The next issue is whether the visual existed before the event described in the post. Reverse-image search tools – Google Lens, TinEye, and Yandex Images are the three most commonly used – can locate identical or visually similar images across indexed webpages. Running the same photo through more than one of these tools is worth doing, since each indexes a different slice of the web and Yandex in particular tends to surface older Russian- and Eastern European-language matches that Google misses.
The complete image should be searched first, followed by cropped versions containing distinctive buildings, vehicles, banners, damage patterns, or groups of people. Cropping is especially useful when a repost adds text, borders, logos, or a new aspect ratio that prevents an exact match.
A search result does not automatically reveal the first publication. It only shows that a similar visual appeared on a page available to the search engine. Publication dates therefore matter more than visual similarity alone.
Example: A photo shared as “scene from the 2026 protests” is genuinely useful evidence only if no earlier copy exists. If the same image turns up in a 2022 news article about flooding in an entirely different country, it cannot be authentic evidence of the 2026 event – the older page may also reveal the original location, photographer, and context that were stripped out during reposting.

Break Video Down into Keyframes, Not Just the Thumbnail
Video verification requires several still frames rather than reliance on the preview image. Thumbnails can be replaced, edited, or unrelated to the footage itself, and a video is frequently re-uploaded with a new title or caption while the underlying clip is left untouched.
Frames from different moments are more useful when they contain permanent landmarks, readable signs, unusual vehicles, recognizable infrastructure, or distinctive damage – an explosion, a road sign, a specific vehicle, or a building facade are typically the most identifiable frames to extract.

An older match may establish that a clip predates the current claim. The absence of a match has much less meaning: it indicates only that an earlier copy has not been located, not that the footage is new or authentic.
Cross-Check Location Clues Against Maps and Satellite Imagery
When no earlier publication settles the issue, the scene itself may reveal whether the claimed location is plausible.
Permanent geographic and structural features usually carry the most weight. Road layouts, coastlines, mountain profiles, bridges, railway lines, major intersections, monuments, and distinctive building shapes can be matched against maps, satellite imagery, and street-level photographs. Bellingcat’s geolocation toolkit -combining Google Earth, satellite basemaps, and street-view services – is a widely used starting point for this kind of comparison.
Smaller indicators may reinforce that match: road markings, traffic direction, public transport design, vehicle-registration formats, utility poles, streetlights, shop signs, storefront language, and police or emergency-service insignia can all narrow the possible location.
Example: A post captioned “protest in Paris” may show signage language, road structure, and building facades that instead match a specific street in Santiago, Chile – a mismatch that points to the footage belonging to a different event entirely, even if the image itself is real and unedited.
None of these clues is conclusive on its own. Imported vehicles operate in many countries, official uniforms change, border regions may use several languages, and architectural styles often cross national boundaries. Confidence comes from several independent details pointing toward the same place without major contradictions.
Visible text deserves careful treatment. A banner may identify an organization rather than the city. A watermark, ticker, or translated caption may have been added after recording. Text physically present on a building, road sign, vehicle, or storefront carries a different evidentiary value from text overlaid during editing.

Verify the Recording Time Through Season and Shadow Clues
A genuine recording from the claimed location may still be years old or connected to another event. The likely recording period therefore requires separate evidence.
Shadow direction, weather, clothing, vegetation, snow or rainfall, and the position of sunrise and sunset can all help confirm whether the visual evidence matches the claimed date. These clues are strongest when used together rather than individually – any single one is easy to misread.
Example: Footage claimed to show a protest during a summer heatwave, but showing participants in heavy winter coats and snow-covered streets, is a strong signal that the recording period does not match the claimed date, regardless of how authentic the footage otherwise looks.
Weather should remain supporting evidence rather than a final answer. Conditions can differ across districts, and a video uploaded at night may have been recorded hours or days earlier. Clothing and vegetation are also easy to overinterpret because local climate, personal preference, and image quality can create misleading impressions. Changes to the built environment are often stronger indicators – a demolished building, repainted road, replaced billboard, completed bridge, or renovated public square can place the footage before or after a documented date.
Shadow analysis can sometimes estimate direction or approximate time, but it is vulnerable to error from camera rotation, uncertain dates, reflections, and blocked sunlight. It is most useful only after the location, orientation, and likely date range have already been established.
Treat Metadata and Upload Timestamps as Supporting Evidence Only
Metadata (EXIF data) may contain coordinates, creation times, or device details when an original file is available. However, this information is frequently stripped or altered as a file passes through social platforms and messaging apps, and any metadata that remains may record editing or export time rather than the moment the footage was actually captured.
This means an upload timestamp of “today” should never be treated as proof that the footage was filmed today. Instead, corroborate it against the original source URL, the uploading account’s posting history, the exact wording used in the repost, and any earlier versions of the same file that can be located. Metadata should support a broader body of evidence, not stand alone as the deciding factor.
Cross-Check Against Wire-Service and Local-Press Captions
A large account may only be the latest republisher. The most useful source is the earliest identifiable person or organization able to explain how the footage was obtained.
If the same scene appears in coverage from a wire service – AP, Reuters, or AFP – or from established local media, compare the date, location, photographer credit, and event name in that original caption against the claim currently circulating on social media. This is one of the fastest ways to catch a specific kind of manipulation: the image or video itself is completely genuine and unedited, but the caption attached to it has been changed.
Example: A photo is authentic and its original agency caption correctly identifies it as “aftermath of last year’s earthquake.” If it resurfaces on social media relabeled as “today’s bombing,” the deception happened entirely at the caption level – no visual editing was needed to mislead viewers.
An uploader’s history can show whether the account normally posts from the reported area, whether it existed before the event, and whether it shared additional images from the same scene. A new account is not automatically deceptive, but the lack of an established history makes this kind of independent corroboration more important. Multiple outlets displaying the same clip do not necessarily represent multiple confirmations either – they may all be repeating one social-media upload, wire report, or syndication feed. Stronger corroboration comes from reports that identify separate witnesses, official records, different camera angles, or independently gathered details.
Direct contact with the filmer, where possible, can clarify where the person was standing, when recording began, what happened immediately before and afterward, and whether an original uncompressed file exists.
Professional verification teams generally combine all six of these checks rather than relying on one dramatic detail. A claim becomes credible only when the earliest known appearance, the location evidence, the time-of-recording evidence, the metadata, and independent press corroboration all fit the same account without contradiction.
